Tanzania’s Rise in Elite Volleyball Training

Tanzanian Volleyball Federation Leads Talent Development in Dar es Salaam

The Tanzania Volleyball Federation (TVF) has launched a new elite training program in Dar es Salaam to nurture the country’s top volleyball players. This initiative, which began in January 2025, aims to prepare athletes for international competitions, including the 2026 African Volleyball Championship. The program addresses the growing demand for structured training to elevate Tanzania’s presence in global volleyball.

Building a Strong Foundation

Volleyball has been popular in Tanzania since the 1920s, introduced by British colonials and missionaries. The sport gained momentum with the establishment of the TVF in 1955, which formalized grassroots and elite-level development. Today, Tanzania is recognized as a powerhouse in African volleyball, producing talents like Jackson Mmari, who plays for ETV in Germany, and Omary Bure, a key player for Rukinzo Volleyball Club in Burundi.

The new elite training program focuses on identifying and developing young athletes through regional academies. The TVF has partnered with international organizations like Let’s Keep The Ball Flying (LKTBF) to provide equipment, coaching workshops, and scholarships. These efforts aim to bridge the gap between local talent and international standards.

Voices from the Field

Alfred Selengia, a respected coach and CAVB Instructor, emphasized the program’s impact: “Our goal is to create a pipeline of disciplined, skilled players who can compete on the world stage. This program combines modern training techniques with Tanzania’s passion for volleyball.”

Renovatus Sixmund, a former player and TVF ambassador, highlighted the community benefits: “Volleyball unites people across ages and backgrounds. With this training, we’re not just building athletes but also inspiring future leaders.”

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite its progress, the program faces challenges, including limited funding and access to advanced facilities. Many players train on outdoor courts, which can be affected by weather conditions. However, the TVF is addressing these issues by seeking sponsorships and investing in indoor training centers.

The program also emphasizes education, ensuring athletes balance academics and sports. Scholarships have enabled players like those in the LKTBF-supported Kilimagnet Volleyball Club to pursue higher education while competing.

Achievements in Tanzanian Volleyball

  • 1979: National team reached the African Championship finals in Benghazi, Libya.
  • 2018: Women’s U18 beach volleyball team secured fifth place in Africa at a Cairo competition.
  • 2019: Men’s beach volleyball team qualified for the 2022 African Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Looking Ahead

The TVF’s elite training program is a significant step toward cementing Tanzania’s reputation in international volleyball. With continued support, the country aims to produce more players capable of competing in global leagues and championships.
